From Prussia with love A German opera/new wave singer leads a queer one-two punch

by Anthony Glassman

There are few people who can out-weird David Bowie.

From Ziggy Stardust through the Thin White Duke, Bowie had more faces than Sybil. However, when he took the stage for Saturday Night Live in 1979, he was joined by two back-up singers: now-famous drag queen Joey Arias and an enigmatic, artificially created German named Klaus Nomi.

Born Klaus Sperber in 1944, Nomi relocated to New York City, where his bizarre fashion sense and counter-tenor voice led to fame in the New Wave underground of the era, when punk and disco were both marrying and dying.

Unfortunately, before the "perfect video star" could make it big on MTV, he gained notoriety of a different sort: In 1983, he became one of the first openly gay stars to die of complications from AIDS.

Now filmmaker Andrew Horn has collected footage, pictures and interviews to paint a portrait of the man behind the shiny outfits and mime-like makeup, the one who shoved opera down the throats of dance club patrons and made them like it. The Nomi Song will be playing at the Cleveland Institute of Art's Cinematheque, sending April out as it

Speaking of roaring, in the same weekend the Cinematheque continues the gay and European theme with Bear Cub, a Spanish import about Pedro, a big furry hunk of a man. He gets stuck watching his precocious young nephew after his sister gets detained while on vacation in India.

Pedro must now fight to keep the child he never wanted but has grown to love, as well as earn the respect of his own distant mother who has come rampaging back into his life.

Bear Cub is sometimes naughty. People touch each other inappropriately, so nobody under 18 is allowed in.
